We say this all the time to friends and family as they set out on a vacation or journey, but do we ever actually take steps to ensure safety? As we pulled out of the driveway in our rented minivan, my fiance said a quick prayer over us for safe travels. We were embarking on a 16-hour overnight drive to visit his family with five kids in tow. We needed all the help we could get. Knowing that any adventure includes a fair amount of risk, we also understand the reward can be truly worth it. Peace of mind means a great deal when you think about all the things that could go wrong. With the noise and distraction of so many kids, the exhaustion of late-night driving, and the uncertainty of traveling new roads, We knew a million things could go wrong. Peace of mind was important. Peace of mind was downright necessary. Thankfully, we have it, in part due to an active prayer life, but also by knowing we’ve taken necessary measures to ensure help in the event of an emergency, like updating our contact information and staying current with our roadside assistance plan.
It’s not possible -or even wise- to waste time imagining the worst, but it is easier to maintain focus when steps are taken to protect our large almost-family. Knowing that we were registered with our state’s Emergency Contact Information Service was just one way we prepared for a less-stressful journey (having plenty of snacks on hand was another way). Thankfully, we made it without any problems and had a truly enjoyable time, which is the point of summer vacations, right? If you’re planning on traveling this summer, or know loved ones who are, take two to three minutes to register through TIFF with your state’s ECI. Of course, we hope you’ll never need it. But just knowing you’re prepared for an emergency in the event one arises will help you have that same peace of mind we had as you enjoy your travels.
