Those Irrational “Mom” Thoughts…

Anytime I find myself unable to fully control a situation my kids are in, I tend to imagine the worst possible scenario. It seems to be a coping mechanism, and I imagine I’m not alone in my thinking. Moms, do you picture the house suddenly catching on fire the minute you leave the kids alone for a quick trip to the grocery store? Do you know for a fact they WILL be kidnapped if you let them go to the movies with their friends? Kids crossing the street is certain to bring the one hit-and-run driver in town to your street at that exact moment? My kids tease me about this all the time because they’re teenagers. They’re invincible.

So, I talk myself down to a compromising middle ground to allow them to be a little independent and I pray for their safety. But whenever I can find a way to take preventative measures, I absolutely do so. I figure that’s God’s way of letting me feel like I have some say in the matter. I won’t always do it perfectly, but it is a perfect system. They have cell phones and know to keep them on and in hand whenever they’re out and about. They check in and let me know where they are. And when they ride in the car with friends, they make sure that friend is registered with TIFF. I still pray for their safety, and try not to be a control freak, but I would definitely want to know right away if something were to happen to any of my children. Wouldn’t every parent want that?

Have you considered what you would do if your child or another loved one was in an accident? How soon would you want to be made aware? Because we can’t keep our kids as close as we’d like as often as we like, TIFF’s Initiative is the next best thing. Make sure you and your loved ones are registered today. It takes less than a minute and could make all the difference in the world.
